Women suspecting they have endometriosis will soon have access to two new non-invasive tests through their GP, aimed at expediting diagnosis. These advancements, announced on July 7, 2026, are expected to significantly reduce the current average wait time of over nine years for diagnosis.
Overview of New Endometriosis Tests
The two tests include a saliva test known as Endotest, which detects genetic material, and a gut electrical signal test called Endosure. These tests are recommended under new draft guidance from the NHS in England and Wales and are designed to assist GPs in identifying endometriosis more efficiently.
Ami Robertson, 23, who suffered from endometriosis pain since age 16, shared her experience: "I started to doubt myself, wondering if it was all in my head. No one should have to wait years to be believed." Her journey highlights the critical need for faster diagnosis and treatment options.
Patient Experiences and Impact
Many women have faced long struggles to receive a correct diagnosis for endometriosis, often being misdiagnosed with conditions like irritable bowel syndrome. Sharan Uppal, 46, from Huddersfield, recounted her daughter Simran's ordeal, stating, "I lost count of how many times I took Simran to the GP. We ended up in A&E three or four times, and nobody would take ownership."
