The Attorney General of New Mexico, Raul Torrez, has accused the United States Department of Justice (USDOJ) of obstructing the state's investigation into Jeffrey Epstein, as outlined in a letter dated June 30, 2026. This letter highlights the federal government's failure to respond to requests for records related to Epstein's activities at Zorro Ranch.
New Mexico's Investigation into Epstein
New Mexico reopened its investigation into Epstein in February 2026 after the USDOJ released millions of previously sealed files. Torrez stated, “Despite verbal assurances of cooperation from the USDOJ, access to the requested records has not been granted.” The investigation aims to uncover details about Epstein's alleged sex trafficking activities at Zorro Ranch, where he hosted numerous influential guests.
The state had initially attempted to investigate Epstein in 2019 but was instructed to pause by the federal government. Torrez is determined to continue this investigation, which he claims has faced “real and escalating harm” due to the lack of federal cooperation.
Federal Response and Allegations
In response to the accusations, the USDOJ has denied any obstruction, asserting that it is ready to assist New Mexico’s investigation. Torrez expressed concern that every day the records are withheld, the chances of building a solid case diminish. “Witnesses relocate and become unreachable,” he noted, emphasizing the urgency of accessing these records.
