A research team from the Natural History Museum of Denmark has officially established a new genus of rove beetles named Luffy gen. nov. on July 7, 2026, in the open-access journal ZooKeys. This genus is inspired by Monkey D. Luffy, the iconic character from the popular manga and anime One Piece.
Significance of Naming the Beetle Genus Luffy
The decision to name the new genus Luffy reflects the beetles' distinctive morphological features. The species within this genus possess mandibles, antennae, and maxillary palps that are notably longer and slimmer compared to related groups. Researchers likened these elongated characteristics to Luffy's unique rubber body abilities, which allow him to stretch and expand.
Discovery of Two New Beetle Species
Two species have been classified under the newly established genus: Luffy schillhammeri and Luffy nika. The former was discovered in the broadleaf forests of Yunnan Province, China, and honors Dr. Harald Schillhammer for his contributions to rove beetle research. The latter, Luffy nika, was found in Louang Namtha, Laos, with its name referencing Luffy's legendary Devil Fruit awakening, Hito Hito no Mi, Model: Nika.
