Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu expressed grave concerns on Tuesday about the potential sale of F-35 fighter jets to Turkey by US President Donald Trump. He stated that such a move would "destroy" the balance of power in the Middle East. This warning comes as Trump indicated his willingness to lift sanctions on Turkey and proceed with the sale.
Trump's Visit to Turkey and F-35 Jet Sale
During his visit to Turkey on July 7, 2026, Trump became the first US president in over a decade to visit the country, where he was welcomed by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. The meeting marked a significant thaw in US-Turkey relations, which had been strained due to Turkey's purchase of Russian defense systems. Trump stated, "Turkey has been, in many ways, much more loyal than other countries that we think would be loyal," referring to the F-35 jets as "the best, currently the best plane by far."
Despite current US law blocking the sale due to Turkey's possession of the Russian S-400 system, Trump hinted at possible legislative support to reverse this prohibition. He emphasized the need to lift sanctions on Turkey, stating, "It's time. We don't want to sanction friends."
Netanyahu's Concerns Over Regional Stability
Netanyahu's comments reflect deep-seated fears regarding Turkey's military ambitions. He told CNN, "It would destroy the power balance in the Middle East, because Turkey, I think, has aggressive aspirations." His warning highlights the potential implications of an enhanced Turkish military capability on regional stability, particularly in relation to Israel's security.
