Natalia Solórzano Vásquez’s upcoming hybrid documentary, Spells to Revive a Witch, has gained significant support from Spain’s Testaferro and Uruguay’s Guay Films. The project is set to be showcased at the Costa Rica Media Market this week, highlighting the growing international interest in Latin American cinema.
Collaboration with Sputnik Films
Produced by Sputnik Films, known for its work on the Cannes-selected film Land of Ashes, Spells to Revive a Witch marks the first partnership between Solórzano Vásquez and this emerging production house. The documentary is currently in post-production, following Solórzano Vásquez's previous success with her feature debut, Avanzaré tan despacio, which premiered at the IDFA in 2019.
Mariana Murillo’s label at Sputnik Films has previously produced notable works, including the follow-up project, Madre Pájaro. The collaboration aims to blend documentary storytelling with personal narratives, providing a unique perspective on Costa Rican culture.
Exploring the Legacy of Soralla de Persia
Spells to Revive a Witch focuses on the mythical fortune teller Soralla de Persia, who gained fame in the 1960s. The documentary intends to create a platform for women to connect with her legacy, inviting them to invoke her spirit through their memories and interpretations. This innovative approach aims to shed light on the cultural significance of fortune-telling in Costa Rica.
