Naomi Osaka of Japan triumphed over world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka on Centre Court at Wimbledon, winning 6-2, 7-6 (2) on Friday. Osaka's victory marked her first win on the prestigious grass courts, showcasing her impressive performance against the Belarusian player, who had not lost in straight sets at a Grand Slam since 2020.
Osaka's Remarkable Performance at Wimbledon
Osaka, seeded No. 14, arrived in a striking outfit that blended traditional Japanese elements with a nod to Quentin Tarantino's Kill Bill, capturing the crowd's attention. However, it was her skill on the court that truly made an impact. She outperformed Sabalenka, hitting 21 winners compared to Sabalenka's 15 and serving eight aces to Sabalenka's five.
“It has been a long time since I’ve had so much fun on the court, so to do it here means a lot,” Osaka said. She acknowledged her previous struggles against Sabalenka, having lost to her three times in a row prior to this match.
Sabalenka's Frustration and Reflections
Sabalenka expressed her disappointment post-match, stating, “Obviously I’m not happy with the way I played. She overpowered me.” The world No. 1 struggled to regain her form, especially after failing to convert two break-back points early in the match. Her frustration was palpable as she smashed a ball out of Centre Court.
