Naomi Osaka showcased her remarkable return to form by defeating world number one Aryna Sabalenka in the Wimbledon quarter-finals on July 5, 2026. After a challenging comeback from maternity leave, Osaka emphasized the importance of her new coaching approach and family support in regaining her competitive edge.
Osaka's Journey Back to the Court
Two years ago, Osaka faced an emotional battle, struggling to reconnect with a sport she once found effortless. After taking 15 months off for maternity leave, she confessed, "I didn’t feel like I’m in my body." This sentiment echoed throughout her initial matches upon returning, leading to a 6-2, 6-1 defeat against Iga Swiatek in Rome, which served as a pivotal moment for her.
Reflecting on that loss, Osaka stated, "I felt like I just shut everyone out. I just got on a plane back home." It was during this period of introspection that she realized her need to enjoy the sport rather than succumb to the pressure. "I have a life outside of that. I have to treasure tennis in the way that I can," she explained.
Impact of Coaching and Family Support
Osaka's performance against Sabalenka was described as her best since returning to the sport. She attributed this resurgence to her new coach Tomasz Wiktorowski, who she began working with in mid-2025. "We all understood that I have potential to play really good on grass," Osaka noted, highlighting her improved movement and confidence on the court.
