Nansun Shi, the pioneering producer who significantly shaped Hong Kong's cinematic landscape, passed away on Monday at the Hong Kong Sanatorium & Hospital. She was 75 years old and had been battling health issues since 2022. Shi was instrumental in the success of films like Infernal Affairs, which was later remade by Martin Scorsese as The Departed.
Nansun Shi's Impact on Hong Kong Cinema
Shi co-founded Film Workshop in 1984 with director Tsui Hark, which became a cornerstone of Hong Kong film during its golden age. This production house was known for its unique projects that deviated from mainstream cinema. Under her guidance, the workshop produced iconic films such as A Better Tomorrow and A Chinese Ghost Story, which helped to establish Hong Kong cinema on the global stage.
Throughout her career, Shi played a crucial role in creating international distribution channels for Chinese-language films at a time when many producers overlooked global markets. She was one of the first to film in mainland China, fostering collaboration between the two film industries.
A Legacy of Innovation
Born and raised in Hong Kong, Shi began her career in television before transitioning to film in the early 1980s. Her early work included overseeing administration and financing at Cinema City, where she earned the nickname “Housekeeper” for her organizational skills. This experience set the stage for her later success with Film Workshop.
