Moldovan Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu announced his resignation on Friday, a surprising move that leads to the collapse of his cabinet. Appointed by President Maia Sandu in November 2025, Munteanu served just eight months before stepping down, citing a conflict with his principles. "Today I end my term as prime minister," he stated on social media, indicating his inability to fulfill his mandate.
Reasons Behind Munteanu's Resignation
Munteanu did not provide extensive reasons for his departure, leaving many questions unanswered. In his resignation statement, he expressed, "I accepted the proposal to be prime minister with a lot of responsibility and strong conviction that I could contribute to changing things for the better. [But] the moment I feel I can no longer exercise my mandate in accordance with my principles and beliefs, I choose to walk away."
President Sandu accepted his resignation and expressed gratitude for his leadership during a challenging period for Moldova. She emphasized the need for greater involvement in complex decisions from her cabinet members, denying claims that Munteanu faced restrictions in his role. "Speculation that he wanted to combat abuses but was not permitted to do so is false," she stated.
Impact on Moldova's Government
The resignation of Munteanu poses significant implications for Moldova's political landscape. Sandu indicated that a new prime minister could be appointed quickly, and Munteanu will remain in interim charge while consultations with parliamentary factions take place. "We must have a united, strong team in the government that will fulfill our country's objective," she remarked, emphasizing the urgency of Moldova's aspirations to join the European Union.
