Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced a significant uranium supply deal during their meeting in Melbourne on July 9, 2026. This agreement aims to support India's growing nuclear energy sector, emphasizing that the uranium will be used exclusively for peaceful purposes.
Strengthening India-Australia Relations
The leaders highlighted the importance of their nations' partnership, particularly in energy and defense sectors. Modi remarked on the deep connections within the Indian diaspora, stating, "The energy felt at the reception defines the Australia-India partnership."
During the event, Albanese noted, "Our Indian community has contributed so much to the story of modern Australia. It’s made our country a better place." The gathering was attended by tens of thousands of expatriates, showcasing the robust ties between the two nations.
Defense Cooperation and Security Initiatives
In addition to the uranium deal, Modi and Albanese committed to enhancing defense cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region. A joint declaration was issued, stating, "We recognize that our partnership must evolve to meet changing strategic circumstances." The countries plan to accelerate their advanced defense collaboration to bolster regional security.
