Ministers will unveil new measures to enhance transparency in political donations on Monday, as Nigel Farage faces scrutiny over gifts from a convicted fraudster. The government aims to introduce regulations to curb large political donations, particularly from foreign benefactors.
New Regulations on Political Donations
The upcoming regulations will impose a £100,000 cap on donations from individuals who have moved to the UK from abroad within the past year. This initiative seeks to prevent foreign donors from circumventing restrictions by registering to vote in the UK.
Communities Secretary Steve Reed stated, “British democracy is not for sale. These tough new rules will shut down dodgy funding, stop foreign money influencing our elections and keep our democracy strong.”
Investigation into Farage's Financial Ties
Farage is currently under investigation by Daniel Greenberg, the parliamentary standards commissioner, regarding a £5 million donation from crypto billionaire Christopher Harborne. New revelations have surfaced about gifts received from George Cottrell, a crypto entrepreneur and convicted fraudster.
