Mikel Oyarzabal has emerged as a crucial figure in Spain's quest for a second World Cup title, following their impressive 3-0 victory over Austria on Thursday at the Los Angeles Stadium. This win marks Spain's first knockout stage success since their triumph in 2010, and Oyarzabal's performance has been instrumental in this resurgence.
Mikel Oyarzabal's Historic Contribution
In the match against Austria, Oyarzabal scored twice, making him the first Spanish player to achieve a brace in a World Cup knockout match since Emilio Butragueno in 1986. With this achievement, he has surpassed Butragueno's international goal tally, now totaling 29 goals for Spain, while also overtaking Fernando Morientes and matching Fernando Hierro.
Oyarzabal's journey to this point has not been without challenges. He missed the 2022 World Cup due to an ACL injury but has since become a key player for La Roja, contributing significantly with 13 goals and 8 assists in just 14 appearances on the international stage.
Overcoming Past Challenges
Before his recent successes, Oyarzabal faced disappointments, including missing out on the 2022 World Cup and being excluded from Spain's 2023 Nations League victory. His resilience and determination have turned him into an invaluable asset for coach Luis de la Fuente, especially after the team's earlier struggles in the Nations League finals.
