Microsoft has announced significant layoffs, cutting approximately 4,800 roles, or 2.1% of its global workforce, on July 6, 2026. The layoffs primarily affect the Xbox division, which is set to lose 1,600 employees, as part of a broader restructuring effort aimed at adapting to changing market demands.
Overview of Microsoft’s Layoffs
The recent layoffs at Microsoft come amid fears that advancements in artificial intelligence may displace human jobs. Amy Coleman, EVP and chief people officer, emphasized that while roles are being eliminated, they are not being replaced by AI. She stated, "Some of the tasks we do every day can now be automated, and that means we all need to keep learning, keep building new skills, and keep adapting as the work evolves."
Despite the layoffs, Microsoft remains committed to reskilling its workforce. Coleman noted that over the past year, the company has successfully redeployed more than 4,000 employees into new roles.
Impact on Xbox Division
The Xbox division's layoffs mark what CEO Asha Sharma described as "the most significant restructure in Xbox history." In an email to employees, Sharma revealed that the business is not performing well, operating at margins that are 3–10x lower than comparable companies. She acknowledged that previous strategies, including the Game Pass subscription service, did not yield the anticipated growth.
