Microsoft has revealed plans to cut 4,800 jobs, which accounts for approximately 2.1% of its workforce, with the Xbox division significantly impacted. The announcement was made on July 6, 2026, as the company aims to focus on areas that can better serve customers in a rapidly evolving industry.
Job Cuts and Xbox Restructuring
In a memo to employees, Amy Coleman, executive vice president at Microsoft, emphasized the need for the company to adapt to changing market demands. Over 1,600 roles will be eliminated from the Xbox division, marking a critical moment in its history. New Xbox chief executive Asha Sharma stated that this is the beginning of the "most significant restructure in Xbox history."
As part of the restructuring, four Xbox game development studios—Compulsion Games, Double Fine Productions, Ninja Theory, and Undead Labs—will be spun off, resulting in another 1,600 job cuts. Sharma reassured staff that these changes are intended to secure a stronger future for Xbox, stating, "History is full of companies that mistake longevity for inevitability. We will not be one of them."
Industry Challenges and AI Influence
The job cuts come at a challenging time for the gaming industry, which has faced numerous layoffs in recent years. In 2024, Xbox reduced its workforce by over 2,000 staff and closed four studios following the acquisition of Activision-Blizzard. Furthermore, Microsoft announced plans to cut up to 9,000 jobs in early 2025 as it pivoted towards increased investment in AI.
