Health officials in Michigan have reported a statewide outbreak of cyclosporiasis, a parasitic illness known for causing severe diarrhea. The outbreak may be linked to lettuce or salad greens, according to a statement issued on Monday. The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) is currently investigating the situation, urging residents to be cautious when consuming these products.
Understanding Cyclosporiasis and Its Symptoms
Cyclospora cayetanensis is the parasite responsible for cyclosporiasis. Symptoms typically appear about one week after exposure and can include:
- Explosive diarrhea
- Nausea
- Fatigue
- Abdominal cramps
While most individuals recover within a few days, those with weakened immune systems may experience more severe symptoms.
Current Investigation and Recommendations
The MDHHS is working with local health departments to identify specific sources of the outbreak. Residents are advised to wash all fruits and vegetables thoroughly and to avoid consuming pre-packaged salads that may have been linked to the outbreak.
