Michael Olise has emerged as a standout player in the World Cup, providing five assists for France, the highest in the tournament. Born in England, Olise's rise from a modest housing estate in Hayes to the international stage is a remarkable story of talent and perseverance.
Early Life and Football Beginnings
Growing up in Hayes, Olise spent countless hours practicing football with his brother, Richard, in their neighborhood park. “Football in these conditions, it’s just freedom,” Olise reflected in an interview with L’Équipe. His early coaches recognized his natural talent and dedication, with Sean Conlon, one of his first mentors, noting, “He’d just be practicing out here all the time, obsessed with football.”
At the age of 9, Olise joined Chelsea's academy, where his skills caught the attention of scouts. Despite being released by both Chelsea and Manchester City, he did not let this deter his ambitions. Instead, he returned to Conlon's academy, We Make Footballers, where he continued to develop his game.
Breakthrough at Reading
Olise's career took a pivotal turn when he was signed by Reading, thanks to the keen eye of academy scout Brendan Flanagan. Flanagan recalls his first encounter with Olise during a European Under-21 Cup game: “Michael came on with 17 minutes to go. Within five minutes, Hayden leaned over to me and said: ‘Who the fuck is that?!’”
