Michael Edwards has officially left his position as chief executive officer of football for Fenway Sports Group (FSG), the owners of Liverpool, on Friday ahead of the upcoming 2026/27 season. This departure marks the conclusion of a planned transition that began when Edwards informed FSG in the autumn of 2025 of his intention to leave.
Edwards' Tenure at Liverpool and Key Achievements
Edwards has had a significant impact on Liverpool during his two spells at the club, which spanned over 15 years. Initially serving as performance director from 2011 to 2016, he later became sporting director and returned as CEO in March 2024. His leadership was pivotal in signing players who contributed to Liverpool's first league title in 30 years during the 2019/20 Premier League season.
Notable achievements during his tenure include:
- Oversaw the signing of key players for Liverpool.
- Helped the club secure its historic 20th English league title in 2025.
- Implemented a new football leadership structure and appointed a new head coach.
Future Implications for Liverpool's Football Operations
With Edwards' departure, speculation arises regarding the future of Liverpool's football operations, particularly concerning the sporting director, Richard Hughes, who is rumored to be leaving the club as well. Sky Sports News' Vinny O'Connor noted that although FSG would have preferred Edwards to stay, they respected his decision.
