Expansion of Live Facial Recognition in London
The Metropolitan Police Service is set to broaden its implementation of live facial recognition (LFR) technology, with plans to roll it out in London's West End by Christmas this year. Following this initial deployment, the technology will extend to another six locations across the city in 2024.
Details of the New Technology
The forthcoming LFR systems will feature fixed cameras that may be mounted on existing street infrastructure, including lamp-posts and other urban fixtures. This upgrade aims to enhance public safety and streamline law enforcement operations in bustling areas.
Public Concerns and Criticism
Despite the anticipated benefits, the initiative has sparked significant backlash from critics who argue that the deployment of such technology could lead to the unwarranted surveillance of innocent civilians. Many fear that this expansion will effectively subject tens of thousands of individuals to what they describe as a “digital police lineup,” raising serious ethical and privacy concerns.
