In a bid to enhance user privacy, Meta announced on July 7, 2026, that its smart glasses will now disable the camera if the privacy LED light is tampered with. This update follows growing scrutiny and public backlash regarding the misuse of its devices.
New Privacy Features for Meta Glasses
The update aims to address the issue of modders who have been known to physically alter the LED light, such as drilling into it. Alex Himel, Meta's VP of wearables, previously indicated that the company was aware of the increasing misuse as adoption of the devices grew.
Previously, the company attempted to discourage tampering by prompting users when the light is blocked with tape or other objects. However, many users found workarounds for this measure. The new feature is a direct response to these issues, ensuring that the camera cannot be activated if the privacy light is compromised.
Concerns Surrounding Smart Glasses
Privacy concerns surrounding smart glasses have intensified, particularly with reports of potential facial recognition features being added. Additionally, incidents of harassment involving the devices have led to public outcry. Some venues, like courts in New York and Philadelphia, are contemplating bans on camera glasses to protect privacy and safety.
