Meta is reportedly developing innovative smart glasses that could continuously record audio and take photos every few seconds. According to the Financial Times, these 'super sensing' glasses aim to provide users with an always-aware AI assistant. The development comes amid ongoing scrutiny over privacy implications, as the tech giant navigates concerns surrounding user data and recording features.
Features of Meta's Smart Glasses
The prototype smart glasses are designed to capture audio and images seamlessly. Users could interact with Meta's AI to retrieve information based on the captured data, although direct access to the audio and images may not be available. Instead, it appears that only metadata will be uploaded to Meta's servers for analysis.
In a proposed system, raw footage and audio would not be stored, addressing privacy concerns. Meta spokesperson Dave Arnold stated, “Our approach has been to develop new technologies that will help people throughout their day, with privacy built in from the ground up.”
Privacy Concerns Surrounding Continuous Recording
Should these smart glasses be released, they are likely to face significant privacy scrutiny. Previous reports indicate that Meta has encountered backlash over facial recognition features and incidents involving users filming others without consent. The company has already implemented updates to disable the camera if the LED indicator is tampered with.
