Meta has announced the discontinuation of its Muse Image AI feature, which launched on Tuesday. The feature allowed users to generate images using content from public Instagram accounts, but faced backlash over privacy issues, prompting the company to reevaluate its approach.
Privacy Backlash Spurs Meta's Decision
The launch of Muse Image was met with significant criticism from users and privacy advocates alike. According to Meta, the feature was designed to be a creative tool that gave users control over their public content. However, the automatic opt-in process for image generation raised alarms.
“Our intent was to provide a useful creative tool and to give people control over whether their public content could be referenced in this way,” Meta stated. The company acknowledged that the feature “missed the mark” and is no longer available.
Industry Reactions to Muse Image AI
Critics included prominent figures such as Emmy-winning actor Hannah Einbinder, who publicly urged users to disable the feature. The SAG-AFTRA union also voiced concerns, stating, “Anything other than a clear and conspicuous opt-in for these types of uses of Instagram users’ images is unacceptable.”
