On Friday, Medicare announced a pilot program allowing adults aged 65 and older to access GLP-1 medications for $50. This initiative aims to support seniors like Kathryn, a 66-year-old retiree from Denver, Colorado, who has faced ongoing issues with weight fluctuations throughout her life.
Understanding the GLP-1 Program
The new program is designed to make GLP-1 medications more affordable for seniors, who often struggle with maintaining a healthy weight. Kathryn shared her experience, stating, "Every time that that has happened, it’s been a little bit greater of the loss and the gain, which is really unhealthy." At her heaviest, she weighed 220 lbs.
Medicare's initiative is a response to rising costs and the need for accessible healthcare options for older adults. By providing a lower price point, the program hopes to alleviate some of the financial burdens associated with these medications.
