Dutch cyclist Mathieu van der Poel secured his third stage victory in the Tour de France on July 9, 2023, by winning the ninth stage, which was shortened due to extreme heat conditions. Competing against fellow breakaway riders, Van der Poel triumphed in a sprint, finishing ahead of Tobias Johannessen in second and Tom Pidcock in third.
Van der Poel's Remarkable Performance
The 31-year-old former world champion expressed his satisfaction with the win, stating, "It was a super hard day. The start of the Tour was not great for our team, but I think, like always, we stayed calm." This victory marks Van der Poel's first personal stage win of the Tour after supporting his teammate Jasper Philipsen in previous stages.
Despite facing significant challenges, including a headwind and difficult road conditions, Van der Poel managed to make a decisive move on the final categorised climb, the 900m-long Mont Bessou. He was able to break away from the group and secure a lead that ultimately led to his victory.
Impact of Extreme Heat on the Race
This stage was notably shortened by approximately 30km due to a "red alert" weather warning in the central Correze region, where temperatures soared close to 40°C. The decision to shorten the stage was made to ensure the safety of the riders, highlighting the impact of extreme weather on sporting events.
