Former Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy is under fire for remarks made in a column for El Debate on Friday, where he claimed that the French national football team 'does not have any French players.' This statement has sparked significant backlash from political leaders in both Spain and France.
Rajoy's Controversial Remarks on French Players
In his article, Rajoy discussed the upcoming World Cup semi-final match between Spain and France. He noted, "It’s worth remembering that France has been a two-time world champion and was a finalist in the last World Cup. They’ve won every match they’ve played in this World Cup and are currently ranked No 1 in the FIFA rankings. They also have a top-level squad. That said, they don’t have any French players." This comment has led to accusations of racism, drawing sharp criticism from various officials.
Political Responses to Rajoy's Statements
Spain’s current Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez responded vehemently, stating on social media that, “There are those who still measure belonging by surname, place of birth, or skin colour. Others measure it by our roots in a country and our will to contribute to it.” He emphasized that Spain belongs to those who love it and work for it, condemning Rajoy's xenophobic remarks.
In France, the reaction was equally strong. Laurent Nuñez, the French interior minister, described Rajoy's comments as “completely unacceptable,” asserting that they contradict the values of diversity that France upholds. Olivier Faure, leader of the French Socialist party, added, “France is not an ethnic nation; it has no skin colour or religion.”
