Johann Grech, the Malta Film Commissioner, has revealed ambitious plans for a new Land Sea Super Stage aimed at attracting more blockbuster films to the island. During the fourth edition of the Mediterrane Film Festival in late June, Grech discussed his vision, which includes a €2 million scholarship fund for local film crews and enhanced production infrastructure.
Growth of Malta's Film Industry
Malta is regaining its status in the international film arena, with 17 projects filmed in 2026, including six feature films and various TV series. Grech emphasized the importance of creating year-round job opportunities in filmmaking, moving away from a seasonal industry.
“We are giving opportunities across different departments of our industry,” Grech stated. The newly launched €2 million scholarship fund is designed to support local talent and enhance skills within the industry.
Strategic Initiatives for Future Success
Grech's commitment to the film industry is evident as he continues to push for improvements in Malta's production capabilities. The Land Sea Super Stage will include a unique water tank large enough to accommodate two Black Hawk helicopters, enhancing the island's appeal for high-budget productions.
