Insurgents in Mali launched coordinated attacks in at least five locations early on Saturday, including a prison in Kenieroba, according to a statement from the Malian army. The conflicts primarily targeted the town of Anefis in the Kidal region, known for its presence of Russian mercenaries from the Africa Corps and Malian troops.
Details of the Attacks in Mali
On Saturday morning, around 4 AM (04:00 GMT), fighting erupted in several towns, including Gao, Anefis, Aguelhok, and Sevare. The attacks were attributed to jihadist groups and their Tuareg allies. The Malian army reported that rebels had taken control of Anefis, where Russian forces are stationed and many Malian military personnel are believed to have been captured.
Mohamed Elmaouloud Ramadane, spokesman for the Azawad Liberation Front (FLA), indicated that “several positions” had fallen to the rebels in Anefis, although he noted that fighting was still ongoing. The attacks mark a significant escalation in violence, coming more than two months after previous assaults that resulted in the death of Mali’s defense minister.
The Strategic Importance of Anefis
Anefis is considered a strategic location due to its proximity to Kidal and its military significance. Wassim Nasr, a journalist specializing in jihadist movements, emphasized that the focus of the insurgents was on capturing this town, which had previously fallen under rebel control during attacks in late April.
