Lewis Hamilton stated that the British Grand Prix at Silverstone will be "a completely different circuit" this year due to the introduction of new cars. The F1 correspondent reported this on July 2, 2026, highlighting how the track's demanding high-speed corners will affect the race dynamics.
Impact of New Cars on Silverstone's Racing Dynamics
The iconic Silverstone track is known for its challenging corners, but this year, the cars will be energy starved. Hamilton explained that the lack of braking points means they will be running at only half of their engines' full power at critical sections of the course. He noted, "All the drivers have been talking in the drivers' chat about how poor the power is going to be." This year's cars will implement a near 50-50 split between internal combustion and electrical power, with 350kW (approximately 470bhp) from electricity and slightly over 400kW from the engine.
As a result, drivers will face significant challenges during the race. Hamilton remarked, "If you look at the speed traces, we start losing deployment going into Copse. Normally the engine is screaming going into there and you are holding on for dear life." This year, drivers are expected to downshift from seventh to sixth gear to maintain higher revs, further complicating their racing strategies.
Driver Reactions to Energy Constraints
The energy constraints have led to mixed feelings among drivers. Hamilton expressed concern that the best parts of the track, such as Copse and Becketts, will not be enjoyable due to power limitations. He stated, "Hopefully they can rectify it for next year." Meanwhile, Ferrari's Fernando Alonso described the situation as "quite sad, for the drivers, but also for the spectators," emphasizing the challenges posed by reduced power.
