In a candid interview, Morgan McSweeney, the former chief of staff to Sir Keir Starmer, acknowledged that the Labour Party did not adequately prepare for governance following its significant victory in the 2024 general election. The interview aired on July 2, 2026, highlighting McSweeney's reflections on Labour's early challenges in office.
Labour's Lack of Preparation for Governance
McSweeney, who played a pivotal role in Labour's 2024 campaign, stated, "We didn’t prepare enough for what kind of world we were going to." He emphasized that the party failed to recognize the substantial changes in society since their last time in power during the 1990s. His comments suggest a disconnect between Labour's leadership and the current political landscape.
He elaborated on the importance of delivering results quickly to meet voter expectations, saying, "You have to deliver quite quickly for people, for them to see the change quickly." This admission points to a broader issue of preparedness within the party and the implications it had on their governance.
Lessons from Early Governance Challenges
Reflecting on the initial months in office, McSweeney noted that Labour's approach was overly cautious. He mentioned that the party should have been "way more optimistic" and criticized an early decision to eliminate winter fuel payments for many pensioners, which later resulted in a policy reversal. This decision, he claimed, "defined the government in a way that did us a lot of damage."
