French football star Kylian Mbappé has issued a strong condemnation of Paraguayan senator Celeste Amarilla after she made a series of racist comments directed at him following France's 1-0 victory over Paraguay on Saturday in Philadelphia. The match, which saw Mbappé score the only goal, has sparked controversy due to Amarilla's inflammatory remarks on social media.
Mbappé's Response to Racist Remarks
In a statement, Mbappé referred to Amarilla as a "despicable woman" unworthy of her position. He expressed that her comments do not represent the passion and honor that Paraguay has shown throughout the World Cup. Amarilla had called him a "colonised Cameroonian" and suggested that Paraguayan players should have physically confronted him after the match.
Mbappé defended both himself and the Paraguayan team, stating, "Through your recklessness and your brazen racism, the entire world has already forgotten the journey and the historic effort that your players accomplished during this World Cup." He emphasized the importance of not allowing hatred and racism to proliferate.
French Football Federation Takes Action
The French Football Federation (FFF) responded to Amarilla's comments by announcing plans to file criminal charges against her. They described her remarks as "utterly abhorrent and unacceptable." The FFF stated, "These remarks are criminal and reprehensible. They must be prosecuted here as elsewhere." This escalation reflects the seriousness with which the federation views the issue of racism in football.
