Former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp disclosed how the club made a significant effort to sign Kylian Mbappe before his transfer to Paris St-Germain in 2017. In a recent interview, Klopp revealed that Liverpool arranged a private jet and a lavish meal for Mbappe and his family during their pursuit of the then-18-year-old forward.
Liverpool's High-Stakes Recruitment Efforts
On the flight from Blackpool to Nice, Klopp recounted, "the entire Mbappe family boarded a private jet with five rooms or something." He emphasized that it was the "most expensive non-transfer" Liverpool had ever invested in.
During the meeting, Klopp noted that they wanted to avoid being seen discussing a transfer. They dined on quality food while circling over the French coast, but ultimately, the efforts did not yield the desired results.
Mbappe's Move to PSG
After the failed negotiations, Kylian Mbappe went on to join PSG on loan with an option for a permanent transfer valued at 180 million euros (approximately £153 million). Over the next seven years, he became PSG's record scorer before transferring to Real Madrid in 2024.
