Keir Starmer will seek to bolster support for NATO during the summit in Ankara on Tuesday, addressing concerns over Donald Trump's critical stance on defense spending. As the outgoing Prime Minister, Starmer aims to affirm the UK's commitment to NATO amidst fears of being sidelined at this pivotal gathering.
Starmer's NATO Objectives
During the summit, Starmer plans to collaborate with European allies to reinforce NATO's unity and address Trump's remarks regarding defense contributions. The UK government has faced scrutiny from the US ambassador to NATO, who stated that “some allies are doing more than others.”
In response, a spokesperson emphasized, “We reject these claims. The UK has always met its NATO spending commitments.” The UK’s defense spending is projected to rise to 2.7% of GDP by 2027-28, although there is no firm commitment to reach a 3% target by the end of the decade.
Concerns Over US Relations
This NATO summit marks a critical moment for Starmer, as it may be his last international appearance before stepping down. Relations with Trump have been strained, particularly over the conflict in Iran. Officials in Whitehall are apprehensive that Starmer might not receive adequate recognition or support during the discussions.
