On Friday, newly appointed Portugal coach Jorge Jesus expressed optimism about the future of the national team, stating there remains a place for star player Cristiano Ronaldo. Despite Ronaldo's recent retirement from World Cup play after Portugal's exit in the round of 16, Jesus is eager to collaborate with the iconic forward as they prepare for upcoming challenges.
Jorge Jesus's Vision for the National Team
Jesus, who signed a four-year contract with the Portugal Football Federation (FPF), aims to lead the team through to the 2030 World Cup. In his first statement, he emphasized, "I haven't spoken to Cris yet. He will never be a problem for the national team or for me." This sentiment reflects his intention to maintain a positive environment within the team.
At 71, Jesus remains energetic, declaring, "I'm 71, but I feel 50 because I'm healthy. I train every day -- an hour or two." His extensive coaching experience includes successful stints with clubs in Portugal and abroad, notably winning 10 trophies with Benfica and leading Flamengo to five major titles.
Ronaldo's Future with the National Team
Ronaldo, who has scored three goals in this World Cup, announced his retirement from World Cup play following Portugal's elimination by Spain. However, he left the door open for a potential return to the national team. Jesus remarked, "Cris is a symbol of Portugal. He will go down in history." This acknowledgment underscores Ronaldo's significant role in Portuguese football.
