On Sunday night, John Oliver highlighted the contentious issue of redistricting in the U.S. as the midterm elections approach. He discussed recent restrictions on the Voting Rights Act and former President Donald Trump's attempts to eliminate majority black districts. This comes as several states, including Texas and California, prepare for significant changes in their electoral maps.
Redistricting in Texas and California
In Texas, Republicans currently hold 25 out of 38 congressional seats. Proposed redistricting efforts could potentially increase their representation to 30 seats. Meanwhile, California has enacted Proposition 50, which aims to redraw districts in a manner that may cost Republicans up to five seats in the upcoming elections.
These changes are part of a broader trend across several states. In Missouri and Louisiana, redistricting is also on the agenda as lawmakers seek to influence electoral outcomes.
