New research from the University of Georgia reveals that casual tones and pop culture references in science videos can significantly enhance viewer curiosity. Conducted on July 12, 2026, the study explored how over 1,000 participants reacted to jellyfish-themed videos on platforms like TikTok and Instagram.
Impact of Tone and Cultural References on Engagement
The research, led by Michael Cacciatore, found that participants generally enjoyed videos featuring a casual tone and references to SpongeBob SquarePants. This enjoyment correlated with increased curiosity about jellyfish and science in general. Cacciatore stated, "People expect humor on social media. Curiosity makes people want to go find answers to questions." Thus, the tone of delivery plays a crucial role in fostering interest.
The study involved collaboration with PBS Digital Studios to create 12 distinct videos. Each video varied in tone, cultural references, and speaker ethnicity. The findings indicated that while humor is essential, cultural sensitivity is equally important. Videos that resonated with white participants often did not connect with Black or Latino viewers, who felt that childlike humor undermined their understanding of science.
Audience-Specific Content Creation Strategies
To effectively engage diverse audiences, content creators need to consider cultural values and humor sensibilities. Cacciatore noted, "You can't just repackage a joke into a different language. It needs to resonate with cultural values." The speaker's ethnicity also impacted viewer curiosity, with Black audiences showing more interest when the speaker was Black.
