At the 60th edition of the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival on Friday, U.S. actor Jeffrey Wright discussed his experiences with the Batman film franchise and his collaborations with Wes Anderson. Wright shared insights into how Matt Reeves has revitalized the franchise, emphasizing its relevance to contemporary themes.
Jeffrey Wright's Perspective on ‘The Batman’ Franchise
Wright, who portrays Commissioner James Gordon, expressed his excitement about Reeves' approach to the Batman films. He stated, “I think [director] Matt Reeves’ interpretation of the franchise is really fresh, and rich in terms of the narrative, but also rich cinematically.” Wright is currently filming the sequel, and he sees the project as a meaningful exploration of modern issues through the lens of a superhero narrative.
“I wouldn’t want to be a part of a big franchise just to be a part of a big franchise,” Wright explained. “But if it resonates with me in terms of the themes and the process and the narrative, then I’m in.” This sentiment highlights his commitment to choosing projects that align with his artistic values.
Collaboration with Wes Anderson
Wright also reflected on his work with Wes Anderson in films like The French Dispatch and Asteroid City. He praised Anderson’s unique aesthetic and his ability to create a distinct cinematic style. “I love working with Wes. I love his films. I love his aesthetic,” said Wright. He appreciates Anderson's disregard for external opinions, describing him as “authentically himself.”
