Actor Jeffrey Wright emphasized the significance of "genuine freedom" during his appearance at the 60th Karlovy Vary International Film Festival on July 7, 2023. The festival honored him by screening the film Basquiat (1996), which he previously introduced at the 32nd Karlovy Vary. Wright is set to receive the KVIFF President's Award at the festival's closing ceremony.
Celebrating Jean-Michel Basquiat's Legacy
Wright highlighted the importance of celebrating the life of Jean-Michel Basquiat, an influential American artist. He stated, "What he represented, I think, is many things. But at his core, he represents the power of freedom, the power of creativity, the power of being genuinely oneself and expressing that." Wright believes that Basquiat embodies the essence of what America aspires to be—a beacon of true freedom.
During the screening, Wright remarked, "He is an American artist who I think speaks to the core of what America wants to be – and that is a beacon of freedom, of real freedom, not superficial freedom, not hypocritical freedom, but the freedom to realize who you are, whoever you may be."
The Importance of Storytelling in Today's World
Wright also discussed the power of storytelling as a vital means of expressing humanity. He said, "Bringing the film here also speaks to another power that I think is so necessary now, and it’s the power of storytelling. It’s something like this idea of genuine freedom that we take for granted now." He urged audiences to seize opportunities for connection and shared humanity.
