The ongoing rainy season in Ivory Coast has resulted in severe flooding that has claimed the lives of 59 individuals as of this week, according to government spokesperson Amadou Coulibaly. The flooding, which began in mid-May, has particularly impacted vulnerable informal settlements, leading to ongoing rescue operations in affected areas.
Impact of Flooding in Abidjan
In the capital city of Abidjan, the situation has been dire, with 10 fatalities reported in just two days. Many residents of the informal settlements, which are often located in flood-prone areas, have faced devastating consequences due to rapid urbanization and inadequate infrastructure. Coulibaly noted that those who complied with government safety instructions and relocated to safer areas have not experienced any deaths.
Specifically, the neighborhood of Attecoube has seen significant loss, with 20 deaths recorded. Some victims had returned to previously cleared sites, highlighting the challenges of managing urban development in flood-prone regions.
Government Response to Flooding
The Ivorian government has been proactive in addressing the flooding crisis by conducting eviction and demolition operations in precarious neighborhoods. These efforts aim to mitigate future risks as the rainy season progresses. Coulibaly emphasized the importance of following safety guidelines, stating that compliance has proven effective in preventing fatalities.
