The International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced on Tuesday that it will lift restrictions on Russian athletes, permitting them to participate in team events and qualifying competitions for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games. This decision comes ahead of the upcoming qualifying events and follows the IOC's earlier decision to lift restrictions for Belarus, allowing its athletes to compete without limitations.
Background on Russia's Olympic Suspension
Russia has faced exclusion from international sporting competitions since its invasion of Ukraine in 2022. The IOC suspended the Russian Olympic Committee in 2023 after Russia recognized regional sports organizations in four Ukrainian territories that it illegally annexed. Despite this, Russian athletes were allowed to compete as neutral participants at the 2024 Paris Olympics and the 2026 Milano Cortina Winter Games, contingent on their non-affiliation with Russia's military.
IOC president Kirsty Coventry emphasized the importance of not punishing athletes for political actions, stating, "It’s not right that athletes should pay the price for this." Coventry noted that the IOC opposes violence and war while continuing to support Ukraine.
Current Restrictions on Russian Athletes
Despite the lifting of some restrictions, the IOC maintains several important bans. Russian athletes will still need to undergo strict anti-doping procedures to rebuild confidence within the global sporting community regarding their participation. The IOC has also made it clear that it will not organize events in Russia nor invite Russian government officials to its events.
