Instagram’s new AI image generator, Muse Image, has raised significant privacy concerns among users and experts since its launch on July 9, 2023. The tool allows users to generate images by tagging public profiles, which has led to fears about unauthorized use of personal photos.
Privacy Advocates Warn of Risks
Privacy advocates have criticized Meta for enabling its AI tool to create images using publicly available content without user notification. According to a blog post from Malwarebytes, users should be aware that their images may be incorporated into the AI's outputs without consent. The easiest way to protect personal content is to switch from a public to a private Instagram account, although this is not ideal for all users.
“It’s a blunt solution, but it prevents strangers from using your public profile as source material,” Malwarebytes noted. However, for users wishing to keep their profiles public, there are options available to opt out of having their photos used.
How to Adjust Privacy Settings
Meta has stated that Muse Image includes “strong controls and safety guardrails” to protect users. Private accounts and users under 18 are automatically excluded from being tagged in AI-generated content. Adult users can opt out by navigating to the “sharing and reuse” section in settings and toggling the appropriate button.
