India has dropped to 125th place in the Global Passport Index for 2026, revealing ongoing challenges in travel freedom for its citizens. This ranking was reported on July 5, 2026, and highlights a need for visas to enter approximately 88 countries, including major nations like the United States and Germany.
India's Passport Performance
Despite falling in rank, India’s overall passport score has seen an improvement, now reaching 45.1, the highest since the index began tracking in 2021. The country offers visa-free access to only 26 destinations, down from previous years, which illustrates a concerning trend for Indian travelers.
In comparison, Namibia holds the 124th position and Azerbaijan follows at 126th. Indian passport holders can travel without a visa to places like Bhutan, Jamaica, and Macau, but significant restrictions remain for entry into most Western nations.
Factors Affecting India's Passport Ranking
The Global Passport Index evaluates passports based on three primary factors: travel freedom, investment opportunities, and quality of life. Each of these aspects contributes to how valuable a passport is perceived to be. India's current rank highlights the ongoing struggles with international mobility for its citizens.
