Ukrainian soldiers are actively testing the HX-2 combat drone developed by the German manufacturer Helsing, with deployments occurring near Pokrovsk as of March 2025. Funded by the German government, these drones are part of a significant military support package intended to bolster Ukraine's defense capabilities against Russian advances.
Deployment of German HX-2 Drones in Ukraine
The HX-2 drone is equipped with advanced artificial intelligence capabilities, allowing for autonomous flight and target acquisition. This innovative technology aims to enhance the operational effectiveness of Ukrainian forces in the ongoing conflict. In early 2025, the German government awarded Helsing a multimillion-euro contract to supply thousands of these drones to the Ukrainian military.
During initial tests, however, reports surfaced regarding technical issues, with some Ukrainian soldiers experiencing difficulties that included drones not being flight-ready. Despite these concerns, a spokesperson from Helsing asserted, "Members of the Ukrainian armed forces are testing the HX-2 drone together with Helsing staff at the front." They described the initial results as "encouraging," indicating potential improvements in drone performance.
Challenges Faced by Ukrainian Drone Operators
Ukrainian soldiers have been vocal about the challenges they encounter while operating the HX-2 drones. The crew, consisting of a pilot and a navigator, prepares meticulously for each flight, accounting for weather conditions and potential electronic warfare tactics employed by Russian forces. The pilot, identified by the call sign Black, emphasized the importance of targeting logistics routes of the enemy, stating, "Our task is to destroy their logistics routes."
