After the announcement of the NHS-backed "marathon a month" challenge, hundreds have shared tips on how to walk 30 minutes daily. This initiative, set to launch next year, aims to reward participants for regular exercise, encouraging better physical and mental health.
Incorporate Short Walks into Your Day
Ed Shirt, a 25-year-old from Prestatyn, Wales, suggests breaking down the 30 minutes into manageable segments. "Walk before work, on your lunch break, or after dinner," he advises. This method allows flexibility and makes it easier to fit walking into a busy schedule.
"You don’t have to do all 30 minutes at once either; three 10-minute walks throughout the day add up just the same," he adds. Ed emphasizes that making walking a daily habit can significantly improve both physical and mental well-being.
Integrate Walking into Daily Commutes
Georgia Blackwood from Dudley, West Midlands, finds ways to walk during her daily routine. By getting off the bus a few stops early, she incorporates walking into her life without needing extra time. "My town centre is about four stops away from me, so I walk there and carry my shopping back, adding some weight training too," she explains.
Using walking as a means of transport not only increases daily steps but also enhances overall fitness without the need for a separate workout session.
Walking with a Companion for Motivation
For Barry Nicholson, 51, walking is more enjoyable with his dog, Max. "Thirty minutes of walking per day is fairly simple for a dog owner," he states. Barry walks Max for 45 minutes daily, reinforcing the idea that having a companion can make regular walking easier and more enjoyable.
"Once you know you’ve got the responsibility to keep him exercised, you have the motivation to go out," Barry adds, highlighting the social benefits of walking with a pet.
