The Palestinian movement Hamas announced on Monday the dissolution of its governing body in the Gaza Strip, a significant political shift after nearly two decades in power. This move clears the way for a technocratic committee to manage the territory, paving the way for new administrative leadership.
Political Shift in Gaza Governance
Hamas has governed the Gaza Strip since 2007, when it seized control from the rival Fatah movement. The announcement comes after a ceasefire took effect last October between Hamas and Israel. Hamas has expressed a willingness to step back from daily governance, though the issue of disarmament remains unresolved.
According to Ismail al-Thawabta, head of Hamas's media office, the decision to dissolve the governing body aims to facilitate the transition to the National Committee for the Administration of Gaza (NCAG). This committee will be led by Palestinian official Ali Shaath, who emphasized the need for a unified authority and clear governance.
Formation of the National Committee for the Administration of Gaza
The NCAG was established by the Board of Peace, which was initiated by former US President Donald Trump during the ceasefire negotiations. However, it has remained outside Gaza due to Israeli objections. Shaath stated that his committee is ready to assume its responsibilities once resources and capabilities are available.
