Greenlanders firmly rejected U.S. President Donald Trump's renewed demand for U.S. control of Greenland on Wednesday during a traditional kayaking championship in Nuuk. This assertion came as Trump emphasized the importance of Greenland for U.S. national security at a NATO summit in Turkey's Ankara.
Greenlanders' Response to U.S. Control Proposal
At the kayaking championship, local Greenlanders expressed their dissatisfaction with Trump's claims. They emphasized that decisions regarding the island's future should be made by its people, not by foreign powers. One participant stated, “Our future should be decided by Greenlanders themselves.”
This rejection underscores a growing sentiment among Greenlanders regarding their autonomy and self-determination, especially in light of international interest in the Arctic region.
Trump's Remarks at NATO Summit
During the NATO summit, Trump reiterated his interest in acquiring Greenland, a semi-autonomous territory of Denmark. He insisted that control over the island was crucial for U.S. national security, citing its strategic location in the Arctic.
