Negotiations between Google DeepMind and its London-based employees regarding unionization faced significant challenges this week. Initial talks left union representatives feeling frustrated and unproductive, according to WIRED. In May, DeepMind employees requested recognition of the Communication Workers Union and Unite the Union as their representatives.
While the company initially denied this request, it agreed to engage in negotiations mediated by a third-party arbitrator. The first meeting occurred on Wednesday, attended by union officers, DeepMind employees advocating for unionization, the arbitrator, and HR representatives. However, union advocates expressed disappointment at the lack of attendance from senior management, which they view as a sign of bad faith in negotiations.
Initial Meeting Outcomes and Concerns
John Chadfield, a CWU officer who attended the meeting, stated, "Recognition talks not being attended by senior management at the opening stage is a leading indicator that a company isn’t engaging in good faith. It’s just a time-wasting exercise." DeepMind, however, countered this claim, asserting that the appropriate representatives were present and that the process is still ongoing.
During the meeting, a DeepMind employee read a prepared letter expressing support for unionization. This letter highlighted concerns about the company’s approach to employee dialogue, stating, "Instead of having meaningful dialogue with its employees about our concerns, Google DeepMind workers have been treated as a problem handed off to HR." The employee reported interruptions from HR representatives during the reading.
Allegations of Union-Busting Tactics
The letter also accused Google of attempting to suppress open dialogue among DeepMind employees by reconfiguring internal communication channels and reprimanding staff who sought to discuss unionization. An anonymous DeepMind employee involved in drafting the letter claimed, "The intention was to intimidate. These are well-established union-busting techniques."
