Datacentres Under Fire in Climate Lawsuits
A new report reveals that datacentres are becoming a focal point in climate-related legal battles across the globe. From the United States to Ireland, and even extending to Chile, the surge in data centres and artificial intelligence technologies is drawing increased scrutiny from environmental advocates and legal experts alike.
Rising Legal Challenges
The London School of Economics (LSE) has conducted an extensive analysis of approximately 3,600 climate-related lawsuits filed since 2015. Their latest annual report highlights a notable uptick in litigation that specifically addresses the environmental impact of datacentres. The key issues at stake include the sources of energy utilized, the significant water consumption, and the air pollution generated by these facilities.
Environmental Implications
As the demand for digital services skyrockets, datacentres are expanding rapidly, resulting in heightened energy needs. This surge is raising alarms over the types of energy sources being employed—particularly those that are fossil fuel-based, which contribute significantly to greenhouse gas emissions. Additionally, the excessive water use required for cooling these facilities poses threats to local water supplies, further exacerbating environmental concerns.
