Former Italy goalkeeper Gianluca Pagliuca recently reflected on his experience during the 1994 World Cup, where Italy faced Brazil in the final. The match, which took place in the United States, ended in a heartbreaking penalty shootout loss for Italy, a moment that still resonates with Pagliuca more than 30 years later.
Pagliuca's journey in the 1994 World Cup
Pagliuca's tournament began with an unprecedented event; he became the first goalkeeper to be sent off at a World Cup during a group stage match against Norway. “At the time, it felt like a stab to the heart,” Pagliuca said. “I’d gone to the World Cup with big ambitions and that red card could have cost me my place in the starting XI.”
Despite the setback, Pagliuca reclaimed his starting position for the quarter-final against Spain after assistant coach Carlo Ancelotti and goalkeeping coach Pietro Carmignani informed him of the decision in secret. “I was overjoyed,” he recalled. “We still laugh about it today.”
Iconic moments from the final
Italy advanced to the final, where Pagliuca produced a pivotal moment by kissing his glove and tapping the post after a shot from Mauro Silva slipped through his hands. “That moment changed my life,” he stated. “If that ball had gone in, we would have lost the final because of my mistake.”
