A German palliative care doctor, Johannes M., was sentenced to life imprisonment on July 8, 2026, after being found guilty of murdering 15 patients in Berlin. The court determined that between September 2021 and July 2024, he killed 12 women and 3 men who were critically ill but whose deaths were not imminent.
Details of the Murders
The court revealed that the victims, aged between 25 and 94, were subjected to lethal drug combinations administered without their consent during home visits. On several occasions, the doctor attempted to destroy evidence by setting fires at the crime scenes. Prosecutors highlighted a particularly alarming incident where he killed two patients in one day, including a 75-year-old man and a 76-year-old woman.
During the trial, which lasted about a year, the doctor remained mostly silent until he confessed to the murder of twelve patients, claiming he believed he was alleviating their suffering. "Throughout it all, I thought this was the best thing for everyone," he stated in court.
Ongoing Investigations
Authorities are currently investigating an additional 76 cases linked to the doctor, suggesting that the full extent of his actions may be far worse. If found guilty in these additional cases, it could mark one of the largest instances of serial murder in Germany's history.
