George Condo is set to return to Hauser & Wirth with two upcoming exhibitions after a brief departure from the gallery. This news comes amidst various cultural developments, including a critique of the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History.
Smithsonian's Response to Heritage Accusations
On July 4, a White House report accused the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History of erasing U.S. heritage. In response, Lonnie Bunch, the museum's chief, stated that the report is unfair and does not accurately represent the institution's efforts. Bunch emphasized, “While there will always be room for improvement, this report is not a fair characterization of the work and totality of the National Museum of American History.” He assured staff that the museum would continue to review the report carefully.
The report suggests that Smithsonian leaders engage in “extreme political activism,” claiming they have adopted an ideological framework that neglects the shared national inheritance. Bunch reiterated the museum's commitment to accurate scholarship and the full narrative of America's story.
