George Cottrell and his mother, Fiona Cottrell, were interviewed under caution by the Metropolitan Police as part of an investigation into donations to Reform UK. The interviews occurred voluntarily and are linked to a broader inquiry into financial contributions made prior to the July 2024 general election, according to sources.
Details of the Investigation
The criminal investigation, initiated following a referral from the Electoral Commission, focuses on donations made to political parties, specifically examining potential violations of the Political Parties, Elections and Referendums Act 2000 (PPERA). The act aims to prevent the evasion of donor restrictions.
Both Cottrells were interviewed by detectives from the Met's special inquiry team. Fiona Cottrell, known for her past relationship with King Charles, has refrained from commenting publicly on the matter. George Cottrell's lawyers have denied any wrongdoing, stating that claims of impermissible donations are unfounded.
Financial Transactions Under Scrutiny
The investigation reportedly includes scrutiny of a £1 million donation made by Fiona Cottrell to a fundraising vehicle for Reform UK, known as Britain Means Business, in June 2024. Of this amount, £500,000 was transferred to Reform UK just weeks before the general election, raising questions about the source and legitimacy of the funds.
